Museums in Asia and the non-West face in many aspects challenges that are quite distinct from those experienced by their western counterparts. Some have adopted traditional museology as their guideline, but the strategy, in reality, is not necessarily conducive to cumulating know-how they seek in exhibition and collection. New contexts emerging in contemporary art also call for ways of dealing with them with flexibility. More recently established museums, thus, are aiming to develop new systems of operation and management.

The situation clearly has to do with changes taking place in the western art world. Museums, traditionally defined as 'white cubes', are now looking in various directions for self-transformation, especially in response to the increasingly crucial roles played by biennials and alternative spaces of contemporary art.

CIMAM awards grants to members to attend conferences, research and travel. Funds for this are limited and are awarded by the Board on the merit of the application. If you would like to apply for a grant please send me full details of what you would like to do with a cv to David Elliott by 01.07.04.
