Selected palaces, historical parks, and museums in Seoul will be toured with a guide. This is the best way to experience the traditional heritage of Korea in a short time. Most of the palaces of the Joseon Dynasty are situated in the northern part of downtown. You can view traditional Korean gardens, architecture, and archaeological sites and also you can enjoy some traditional cultural performances at the palaces.

DT-02 Traditional Cultural Experience

This is an opportunity to experience the Korean culture. In the Namsangol Hanok village, a traditional Korean village, you can participate in some Korean traditional cultural activities provided by the village. You can observe the secrets of ?Hanbok?, the traditional Korean clothing, Korean dancing, playing musical instruments and even how to make Gimchi.

DT-03 Han River Cruise and Shopping

Cruising on the Han River is a wonderful way to relax in Seoul. It is a special experience to watch the sun rise or sunset on the Han River. Although high-rise buildings line the river, gardens on river terraces and hills on the banks give you a refreshed feeling. Near the Jamsil ferry port, the Lotte shopping center and markets nearby are good places for shopping.

Busan is one of the most favored spots for foreigners looking to enjoy international culture in Korea. It is the largest gateway to the peninsula and second largest commercial metropolis in Korea. Splendid relics of the ancient Gaya Kingdom represent one of the most advanced civilisations on the peninsula at the time. It is also a candidate for World Heritage designation. Fine examples of Gaya artifacts are exhibited in museums.

PT-02 New museums and ancient Baekje Kingdom's capital cities in central Korea

Hot springs, beautiful Mt. Gyeryong and many historical sites are just a few of the many attractions that Daejeon, Buyeo, and Gongju offer. A special program of Korean traditional technology performance will be held for ICOM delegates at the National Science Museum. The totally new Gyeryong Natural History Musuem will be waiting for ICOM delegates. A visit to Cultatural Properties Administration and the Institute of Cultural Properties will be hosted by the Director and is expected to give participants a chance to share ideas and current policies. Buyeo and Gongju were capitals of ancient Baekje kingdom for almost two hundreds years. Many archaeological and historic relics at two historical cities exhibit the glorious Baekje culture.

The most popular tourism spots in Korea are the famous mountains and East coast in the Gangwon province. Among them, the rocky Mt. Seorak, Gyeongpodae Lake and Beach, Naksansa Buddhist Temple are considered the most wonderful places to visit. The Seongyojang and the Ojukheun in Gangneung city are very famous houses of Yangban in the Joseon Dynasty. Yeongwol, a small city in the western slope of the Mt.Taebaek, is one of the original places of most famous Korean song, Arirang. In the town, there are many historical sites including the Jangneung, tomb park of the tragic King, Danjong who was killed by his successor, King Sejo who was his uncle.

Jeju Island is located in the South Sea facing the Pacific Ocean in the South. The peak of Mt. Halla is covered with snow during Winter and Spring, but the climate is milder than in the peninsula and ever green forests cover the slopes of the mountain. According to old folktales, there are three abundant things; women, wind and rocks. It implies a characteristic of island culture due to the harsh environment. However, the Island is the most popular place for honeymooners because of the beautiful nature and unique island culture. Touring Gyeonggi province may provide you with a very special experience of ancient and modern history. As the center of Korean nature and melting pot of diverse locally originated culture, numerous archaeological sites and historical monuments remain in the province, especially along the Han River and its tributaries. The Chongokni Paleolithic site and the Hoeamsa Buddhist Temple sites of the Joseon Dynasty are the most important ones among them. The DMZ will be a superb ecological museum of the 21st century of the World.

This adventurous tour, you will experience the typical Korean culture. This tour highlights the introduction and development of Confucianism during the Joseon Dynasty as well as the academic and scholarly life. You can also stay in a traditional Korean village, Hahoe village in Andong and enjoy the landscape (Queen Elizabeth II also opted for this village and stayed for a night a few years ago). Gyeongju is one of the most important historic cities in Korea as well as the rest of East Asia. Gwangju and Jeonju are major cities in the southwestern part of Korea and are two of the most well known centers of Korean traditional arts and culture. Pansori (Korean traditional songs, UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanities), elegant traditional Korean paintings and superb examples of traditional food are waiting for ICOM delegates. The Gwangju Biennale is expected to open during ICOM 2004 SEOUL at a place near the National Museum. Jeonju has been the local socio-political center in the southwestern area and a wonderful place to enjoy all kinds of traditional art craft-works.
